Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to vividly explore the phenomenon through an in-depth look at the developmental experience of directing in novice psychodrama professionals. For this purpose, we interviewed nine novice professionals with up to three years of experience after qualifying as psychodrama specialists from October to December 2022, and analyzed them using Giorgi's phenomenological research method. This resulted in 30 meaning units, 13 subcategories, and a final six superordinate categories. The themes were: ‘Wanting to be helpful to others’, ‘Increased awareness’, ‘Facing difficult times’, ‘Striving for growth’, ‘Growing as a director’, and ‘Changes in life’. The essence of the developmental experience of directing novice psychodramatists is the process of going beyond one's limits and expanding one's life through the awareness of one's own needs, and this developmental experience is connected to an authentic encounter with the protagonist. The main findings are discussed, and the significance of this study is that it provides a basis for the training and education of psychodrama professionals.
